Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has debunked claims that the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 presidential race by his fellow APC governors is an insult to Nigerians, asserting it is an expression of trust in Tinubu’s leadership.
During an interview on Sunday Politics aired by Channels Television, Sule clarified that the move was driven by belief, not manipulation.
“The governors genuinely support the President. There’s nothing disingenuous or mocking about it,” he noted.
The endorsement, which took place on Thursday, involved 22 APC governors, lawmakers, and the party’s national and zonal leaderships.
They publicly declared Tinubu as the APC’s sole candidate for the next general election, even though the President has not officially declared his intention to run.
While the decision has triggered backlash from opposition parties and some citizens who argue the focus should remain on governance, Sule insisted that endorsements are standard political conduct.
He recalled how the PDP once had 31 governors who collectively endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.
“People didn’t accuse the PDP of making a mockery of Nigerians back then. This is no different,” he argued.
Governor Sule also dismissed fears that Nigeria is becoming a one-party system, saying the endorsement was merely a demonstration of party loyalty and political tradition.
