Police heighten security in Ondo over alleged Owo church attack threat

Must read

The Ondo State Police Command has addressed reports suggesting that a letter allegedly written by a suspect involved in the 2022 Owo church tragedy has surfaced, threatening a repeat attack on the same location.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Command stated that the letter’s origin and authenticity have yet to be verified.

Despite this, the Police said they are not taking the matter lightly and have taken swift action to strengthen public safety and avert any potential threat.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, who signed the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, confirmed that officers have been deployed to religious centres across the state.

The heightened security is particularly focused on worship days at churches and mosques.

Patrol and surveillance efforts have also been reinforced in response to the reported threat.

The Police urged residents to stay calm, warning that the circulation of unverified claims can create unnecessary fear and undermine existing security measures.

The Command emphasized that spreading false information could cause panic and disrupt public order.

The statement stressed the importance of responsible communication, appealing to media outlets and the general public to refrain from sharing unconfirmed stories that may worsen the situation.

Citizens were advised to continue with their lawful activities without fear, while also being alert to their surroundings.

The Police further encouraged anyone with useful information or observations of suspicious activity to report to the nearest station or contact the Command using the official emergency lines and online platforms.
