Peter Obi confirms 2027 presidential bid, calls for age limit in politics

Peter Obi has confirmed he will contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election on the Labour Party ticket, reaffirming his loyalty to the party despite ongoing internal strife.

In a viral video shared over the weekend, Obi addressed his supporters and answered questions about his political direction. “I’m still in the Labour Party, and I will contest under it,” he affirmed.

The ex-governor criticized the federal government for contributing to the divisions within various political parties.

He claimed that the conflicts within the Labour Party and the PDP were not organic but orchestrated by elements in power.

Reflecting on his past experience, Obi recounted how he sought the intervention of President Yar’Adua during a similar dispute years ago.

“The president then called the INEC chairman to ensure peace within the parties. That’s the kind of leadership we need,” he said.

He maintained that political parties are weakened deliberately to stifle democracy and vowed to reform the system if elected president.

Obi called on Nigerians to be vigilant and proactive in defending their electoral rights. He noted that while party agents have roles, the ultimate guardians of the vote are the people themselves.

Addressing concerns from a young voter, Obi urged Nigerian youths not to lose hope. “Change is always resisted by those benefitting from the status quo, but that doesn’t mean we stop pushing,” he said.

Finally, he proposed the idea of an age ceiling for public officeholders. Obi, who will be 65 by the next election, said he would prefer not to contest beyond his current age bracket, suggesting that leadership should be handed over to younger generations.
