FUOYE’s one-day VC applauds Tinubu’s student loan scheme

Miss Oluwafunmilayo Oluwaseun, who served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) for a day, has praised President Bola Tinubu for introducing the student loan programme, calling it a transformative initiative for financially disadvantaged students across Nigeria.

Oluwaseun, a 23-year-old final-year student from the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, described the loan scheme as a major breakthrough for students in public universities who might otherwise struggle to access higher education due to financial constraints.

Speaking during a press briefing to kick off her 24-hour tenure as FUOYE’s ceremonial Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday, she said, “We are truly grateful to our President for the student loan programme.

It has been a great support to countless students in public institutions, making education more accessible.”

Oluwaseun earned the temporary position by winning FUOYE’s first-ever One-Day VC competition, coordinated by Professor Adebola Aderibigbe.

Taking inspiration from the initiative, she urged President Tinubu to consider introducing a similar concept at the national level.

She proposed the creation of a “One-Day President of Nigeria” programme — similar to the “One-Day Governor” model previously introduced in Lagos State — as a way to promote youth involvement in governance and leadership.

“Just like FUOYE created this wonderful opportunity, I would like to appeal to President Tinubu to replicate it at the federal level.

A one-day presidency for young Nigerians could foster greater engagement between youth and national leadership,” she said.

Addressing student welfare, she identified several ongoing concerns, including poor internet connectivity, economic challenges, and mental health issues.

She noted that the university is taking steps to resolve these, including submitting proposals for the installation of network masts and initiating a mental health campaign in partnership with FUOYE’s health and counseling units.

In addition, she revealed plans to establish an on-campus market aimed at providing low-cost necessities, encouraging student entrepreneurship, and offering part-time employment opportunities.

Oluwaseun also introduced FUOYE 360, a digital project developed by semi-finalist Miss Mosopefoluwa Sanyaolu.

The platform compiles past examination papers to aid students in their studies and reduce anxiety.

She called on the university leadership to offer support to enhance the platform’s impact and reach.
