Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially announced that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will serve as the political vehicle for a newly formed opposition alliance gearing up for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential elections.
This decision was reached during a strategic meeting in Abuja on Tuesday night, where influential opposition leaders, including Atiku, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, agreed to unite behind the ADC in a bid to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at an event in Kaduna on Wednesday, El-Rufai confirmed the meeting took place, revealing that the coalition’s mission is to ensure Tinubu does not win re-election.
“We had a crucial meeting at 8 p.m. yesterday. The goal is simple: make sure Tinubu returns to Lagos by 2027,” he said.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, also confirmed the group’s endorsement of the ADC, adding that various working committees have been established to smoothen internal arrangements ahead of a formal public unveiling.
According to Ibe, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was only temporarily considered to accommodate former CPC elements before the coalition settled on a final choice.
He explained that the ADC met all the coalition’s criteria and was ultimately selected based on strategic alignment with their vision.
While the alliance has not yet named its presidential candidate, insiders suggest that the process of selecting a flagbearer will begin soon, with an agreement in place to support whoever emerges.
