Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a thorough investigation into the death of a 14-year-old student, Kehinde Alade, who was reportedly killed by a stray bullet in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Kehinde was on his way to take part in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, conducted by the West African Examinations Council, when he was fatally struck.
The incident occurred while he was being transported to the examination centre by his father.
The Oyo State Government, in a statement on Tuesday, indicated that the boy’s father had allegedly been driving against traffic at the time of the incident.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Wednesday confirming that the police officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody.
He added that the Inspector-General condemned the incident in strong terms and assured the public that a full-scale investigation is now underway.
“The IGP has ordered a comprehensive probe into the incident involving officers of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority, which resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade,” the statement read.
He continued, “The officer involved has been apprehended. The IGP has promised transparency throughout the investigation, and the outcome will be made public to ensure justice is served. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this painful time.”
In a separate matter, Adejobi also addressed a violent attack on police officers in Edo State.
He condemned what he described as an unprovoked assault on personnel from the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team.
According to him, the officers were traveling from Lagos and came under attack in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025, near the University of Benin area in Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East LGA.
He said a group of residents reportedly blocked the road and launched an attack using stones, sticks, and other harmful objects, leaving two officers seriously injured.
“Despite being under threat, the officers exercised notable restraint by refraining from retaliating with force,” Adejobi noted, adding that the wounded officers are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
He cautioned against violence directed at security personnel and emphasized that the police are committed to maintaining order.
He also assured that investigations into the Edo incident have begun, and all individuals found responsible will face legal consequences.
