A tragic incident unfolded in Ibadan on Tuesday morning when a student en route to sit for his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) paper was fatally hit by a stray police bullet.
The shooting occurred along the Gbagi Market Road, where police officers were reportedly in hot pursuit of suspects believed to be internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Boys.”
In the course of the chase, one of the bullets allegedly missed its intended target and struck the student, who was riding on a motorcycle alongside his twin brother.
The victim was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Outraged by the development, traders and concerned residents marched to the Oyo State Secretariat with the deceased’s body, calling for justice and accountability.
The protest drew a significant crowd, prompting security agents to reinforce their presence at the secretariat’s entrance to maintain order.
As of the time of filing this report, both the Oyo State Police Command and the state government had yet to release an official statement concerning the incident.
