Katsina: Emir dethrones village leader accused of kidnapping, assault

Alhaji Faruq Faruq, the Emir of Daura in Katsina State, has dismissed Iliya Mantau from his role as the Village Head of Mantau in Yarmaulu, Baure LGA, due to accusations of involvement in a kidnapping and rape case.

The removal was made official yesterday after residents of Yarmaulu lodged formal grievances and local youths staged a protest demanding accountability.

The unrest reportedly stemmed from claims that Mantau and his associates abducted a woman named Zulaihatu and her baby. Despite a N20 million ransom being paid, she was allegedly raped by her captors.

The matter had been in court for close to a year without decisive action from the Emirate, sparking frustration among community members over the prolonged silence.

Addressing the issue, the Emir reaffirmed his commitment to justice and protecting citizens from abuse by any leader, stating, “If anyone feels wrong, even if it is my own child who is responsible, they should come forward and present their complaint to the Emirate. This is an Emirate of the people.”

He also recalled previous instances where the Emirate had punished traditional rulers for misconduct, noting, “Sarki Abdurrahman once ordered the imprisonment of his own son over wrongdoing.”

The dethronement takes effect immediately, with the Emir promising that a replacement leader would be appointed soon, someone who embodies fairness and responsibility.

Residents were also advised not to spread misinformation and to follow lawful channels when seeking redress.
