Tensions mount in universities over unequal distribution of N50bn allowance

Must read

A new wave of unrest is threatening to disrupt operations in Nigeria’s universities following the approval of a N50 billion Earned Allowance by the federal government

The conflict stems from dissatisfaction over how the funds are being allocated among university workers.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has voiced strong objections to the distribution model.

According to them, the bulk of the fund, 80 per cent, has been earmarked for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), leaving only 20 per cent to be divided among SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a statement released Sunday, SSANU President, Comrade Mohamed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, criticised the arrangement as unjust and divisive.

They warned that the imbalance could fuel further discord between academic and non-academic staff, potentially destabilising the already fragile industrial peace in the university system.

Describing the situation as unacceptable, the unions accused the government of deepening the rift between teaching and non-teaching employees, a division they say has long undermined unity and fairness on campuses.
