A senior ally of terrorist leader Bello Turji, identified as Shaudo Alku, has been confirmed dead following a precise military airstrike in Sokoto State.
The Nigerian military, through its Air Component of Operation Fagge Yama, executed a coordinated attack on Sunday, targeting a known insurgent enclave near Tunfa Primary School in Isa Local Government Area.
Alku, who was deeply involved in facilitating terrorist logistics between Nigeria and the Niger Republic, reportedly entered the country to participate in a covert meeting organized by Turji’s group.
A military official, who requested not to be named, disclosed that “reliable intelligence and surveillance enabled troops to locate the gathering, leading to a timely aerial strike that took out multiple key figures.”
“This mission is a major blow to the operational backbone of terrorist networks in the region,” the source added.
“Alku wasn’t just another fighter; he played a central role in procuring arms and overseeing cross-border activities.”
The Nigerian Armed Forces confirmed the death of Alku and other suspected commanders, emphasising that the operation underscores their commitment to eradicating terrorism from states like Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina.
A statement from the military noted that follow-up operations are underway to pursue terrorists who may have escaped the air raid.
Bello Turji remains one of the most wanted terrorist leaders in Nigeria, infamous for orchestrating widespread violence, including abductions and village attacks.
His network spans both national and regional borders, presenting challenges to military efforts.
Security analyst Dr. Yusuf Anka said Alku’s elimination could significantly disrupt Turji’s logistics.
“This is a substantial achievement,” Anka remarked. “However, dismantling these entrenched networks demands ongoing pressure and regional collaboration.”
Locals in Isa confirmed hearing loud explosions during the raid. “When the helicopters arrived and we saw the bombings, we felt hopeful again,” said a resident, who asked to remain unnamed for safety reasons.
This airstrike is part of a renewed military effort under Operation Fagge Yama, focused on flushing out bandit and terrorist elements from Nigeria’s volatile northwest.
The Armed Forces indicated that more details regarding casualties and intelligence outcomes will be released soon.
