Boat tragedy in Kwara claims 27 lives

Must read

A boat accident in Kwara State has led to the loss of 27 lives.

The victims were on their way back from a market trip in Niger State when the mishap occurred.

The incident happened at night three days ago and was reportedly due to the boat being overloaded.

A survivor revealed that although the vessel was designed to carry around 100 passengers, it frequently transports close to 300 people during both dry and rainy seasons.

Severe weather conditions, including a heavy storm and strong winds, also played a role in the accident.

This disaster comes just months after another fatal boat accident in Gbajibo community within Kaiama Local Government Area, which claimed over 100 lives.

Abdullah Danladi, Chairman of Kaiama Local Government, visited the families affected by the tragedy and warned that the government will no longer allow such preventable incidents.

He also announced plans to form a committee that will enforce regulations requiring life jackets and ban nighttime boat travel.

Additionally, the Emir of Kaiama, His Royal Highness Muazu Umar, pledged to increase public education efforts aimed at improving compliance with water safety rules among passengers and boat operators.
