Stray goats arrested in Kano for devouring city’s new trees

Must read

Authorities in Kano State have begun taking action against goats that roam the streets and feed on newly planted trees under the Urban Renewal Scheme, leading to several arrests, of the animals.

This move was confirmed in a statement on Friday by Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, Kano’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, who stated that the goats are currently being held at Zone I Police Division.

“As part of our ongoing Urban Renewal Project, we’ve begun planting trees along major roads, starting with Lodge Road and Race Course,” Dr. Hashim noted.

He emphasized that the goal of the initiative is to minimize heat levels, improve air quality, and beautify the city.

But the project is now being jeopardized by goats wandering unchecked through the city.

“We’ve received complaints that some residents are allowing their goats to roam freely, and these animals are damaging the young trees we’ve just planted,” said the commissioner.

“I want to make it clear: this will not be tolerated. We have already impounded several goats found eating the new trees,” he stressed.

Dr. Hashim said the arrested goats remain in police custody while monitoring teams continue to ensure compliance throughout the city.

Urging citizens to act responsibly, he said: “We’re calling on the public to work with us to protect these efforts. Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Kano.”
