NBA declares two days off court in protest over member’s killing

The Anambra State branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the killing of its member, Ifeanyi-Rolex Iloakasia.

Mr. Iloakasia, affiliated with the Otuocha Bar, was shot dead alongside his client in Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area, while returning from a court session at Ekwulobia High Court on May 15.

In a statement from K.G. Abonyi, Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen and Secretaries of NBA Anambra, the incident was described as a serious attack on the legal community and the rule of law.

Abonyi expressed profound grief over the “senseless” loss, recalling the recent death of Awa P. Awa, former vice chairman of the NBA’s Ihiala Branch, which remains a fresh wound.

To protest this tragic event, the NBA has directed all lawyers within the state to boycott court sittings on May 20 and 21, demanding that justice be served.

The association called on relevant authorities to leave no effort spared in investigating and apprehending those responsible.

While commending the Anambra State Police Commissioner for swiftly visiting the crime scene and launching an investigation, the NBA urged all security agencies, including the DSS, to intensify their pursuit of justice.

The statement added, “The legal profession cannot prosper in an environment of insecurity and fear. Many lawyers have lost their lives to violence in the state, making it imperative that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.”

Furthermore, the NBA appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to enhance security measures throughout Anambra State to prevent future incidents of this nature.
