The Federal Ministry of Education has refuted a circulating report claiming that it has initiated plans to reintegrate Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholars into Nigerian universities following the alleged cancellation of the scholarship programme.
In a statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the Ministry described the report titled “BEA: Education Minister Receives Committee’s Report” as false and misleading.
The release, which has been shared across various media platforms, alleged that the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, inaugurated a committee to oversee the return of BEA scholars to local institutions—a claim the Ministry says is entirely untrue.
“There is no such committee, and no reintegration plan exists,” the statement read, urging the public to disregard the report in its entirety.
The Ministry clarified that the Federal Government had officially announced the discontinuation of the BEA Scholarship Programme in a press release dated May 7, 2025.
The decision, it noted, came after a thorough policy review aimed at strengthening domestic tertiary education.
According to the Ministry, the courses previously offered to scholars abroad under the BEA arrangement are now fully available—and in many cases of better quality—in Nigerian universities and polytechnics.
Despite the programme’s discontinuation, the Ministry reassured that current BEA beneficiaries will continue to receive full government support, including tuition, stipends, and all approved entitlements, until they complete their academic programmes.
The Ministry urged the public to rely solely on information released through its official communication channels to avoid the spread of misinformation.
