Kwankwaso has no more ties with NNPP – Party leader

Must read

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major, has emphasised that Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso is no longer connected to the party, having formally exited in mid-2023.

During a segment on Daily Politics aired by Trust TV, Dr. Major stated that the former presidential hopeful and political influencer ceased to be a party member last year.

He said any continued reference to Kwankwaso in NNPP affairs is misplaced.

“Kwankwaso is no longer a concern for us. He came, made his mark, and left with his followers. Our party has moved beyond that phase,” he explained.

According to Dr. Major, the decision was validated by the NNPP’s constitution and several court decisions, including those issued in Abia State and Abuja.

Addressing the wave of political defections in recent months, the NNPP chairman noted that many of the defectors were originally affiliated with the Kwankwasiyya movement and not the NNPP’s core leadership.

He acknowledged their contributions, particularly in Kano, but made it clear their dissatisfaction lay with the internal workings of Kwankwasiyya.

“Those leaving have said it plainly, they support NNPP ideals but have lost confidence in Kwankwasiyya’s style, which has become authoritarian and unrepresentative,” he said.

Even though the party has lost a few elected officials, including a senator and two House of Representatives members, Dr. Major insisted that this doesn’t signify a crisis within the NNPP.

“These politicians still share our goals. They’re simply distancing themselves from a group that has, over time, alienated its base,” he added.

He also clarified that, from the NNPP’s perspective, the defectors are not enemies. “We maintain strong bonds with them.

Their frustrations are with how things were handled within the Kwankwasiyya circle, not with the NNPP itself.”

When questioned about Kwankwaso’s rumoured connections to the presidency, Major brushed it off, saying, “We’ve had nothing to do with him since June last year. What he does now has no bearing on our party’s affairs.”
