Kano govt warns health workers against diversion of medical supplies

The Kano State Government has issued a strong warning to healthcare workers over the diversion of medical equipment and drugs from public health facilities, promising strict sanctions against offenders.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, delivered the warning during the official launch of a health intervention commodities distribution program across the state.

He reiterated his administration’s resolve to improve healthcare delivery by equipping public facilities with critical medical supplies.

He stressed that all items distributed—designed to combat seven major health conditions—must be provided to patients free of charge.

“We will not condone any form of diversion or misuse of these essential supplies. Any healthcare worker involved in such malpractice will be dealt with according to the law,” the governor said.

The new health interventions under the “Abba Gida-Gida” initiative include the provision of dental chairs, school health kits, free eyeglasses, sickle cell medications, diabetic screening tools, and maternal health packages.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, explained that the initiative targets vulnerable communities and supports the administration’s broader healthcare objectives.

He also noted ongoing efforts such as the renovation of 260 healthcare centers.
