FCCPC clamps down on fake consumer protection agency in Abia

Must read

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has disassociated itself from the Community Crime Prevention Initiative of Nigeria (CCPIN), a group it accuses of impersonating a legitimate consumer protection authority.

In a coordinated operation with security operatives, the FCCPC sealed CCPIN’s office located at 214 Aba-Owerri Road in Aba, Abia State. The action followed verified reports that the group was falsely claiming ties with the FCCPC and misleading the public as a consumer advocacy body.

Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at the FCCPC, confirmed the development in an official statement.

According to him, “During the operation, the operator of the facility, Ambassador Dr. Onwuka K. Okorie, was arrested on-site and is currently in police custody at World Bank Police Station, Abayi-Aba, Abia State, pending further investigation and prosecution.

Several exhibits bearing FCCPC’s name, logo, and false enforcement materials were recovered from the premises.”

The FCCPC emphasised that it has no affiliation with CCPIN or any similar organisation, clarifying that it does not authorise private entities or NGOs to carry out enforcement functions without legal backing.

“The Commission does not delegate such powers to NGOs, private entities, or individuals without formal legal authorisation,” the statement read.

The public has been urged to ignore any claims, campaigns, or enforcement activities attributed to CCPIN or its members, as the Commission remains committed to its mandate of fair and transparent consumer protection.
