Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has emphasized the vital role agriculture plays in securing food supplies, generating employment, and driving the nation’s economic progress.
She made these remarks on Wednesday during an event in Asaba, Delta State, where she oversaw the distribution of farm inputs and financial grants to 400 farmers.
This initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Agricultural Support Programme, in collaboration with the ‘You Matter Charity Foundation’.
Represented by Tobore Oborevwori, the wife of the Delta State Governor, Mrs. Tinubu expressed her pleasure at witnessing active participation from women, youths, secondary school students, and farming cooperatives in agricultural activities.
She highlighted the importance of home gardening, noting it as a longstanding tradition that can continue to support families by easing financial burdens.
She explained that the ‘Every Home a Garden’ programme is designed to encourage households to cultivate their own food, thereby promoting healthier diets and providing fresh produce.
“Gardening is inclusive, regardless of age or gender. Growing your own food improves nutrition and lessens economic strain,” she stated.
Mrs. Tinubu announced that farm tools and seedlings would be distributed to selected groups including women, youths, students, and farming organizations, urging them to utilize these resources effectively and remain dedicated to their agricultural pursuits.
Sharing from her personal experience, the First Lady revealed that she maintains a garden behind her residence, growing crops such as corn and vegetables, and invited others to embrace similar practices to help increase food production nationwide.
In her remarks, Tobore Oborevwori, represented by the Deputy Governor’s wife, Mrs. Catherine Onyeme, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers through access to resources and financial assistance.
She acknowledged the challenges farmers face, including limited access to finance and modern farming technologies.
Mrs. Onyeme described empowering farmers as essential for improving food security, boosting incomes, and elevating agriculture as a key economic sector.
She praised Mrs. Tinubu’s visionary leadership through the Renewed Hope Initiative and encouraged beneficiaries to take full advantage of the support provided.
She concluded by urging all stakeholders to work together to promote a thriving agricultural sector, empower women, and foster sustainable prosperity for Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
