Rainstorm wreaks havoc in Kaduna community, destroys school building

Must read

A violent rainstorm has left a trail of destruction in the Kurya community, tearing off rooftops, toppling walls, with the worst hit being the local primary school, which was completely destroyed, leaving pupils without a place to learn.

Residents described the storm as sudden and fierce, with strong winds and heavy rainfall that lasted less than an hour but caused extensive damage.

Mrs. Ruth Yakubu, a staff member at the affected school, described the incident as heartbreaking.

“It was devastating. We finished classes for today and locked up the school for the day, not knowing that by evening, the school building would be no more.

“By the time the rain stopped, the school building was gone,” she told Afripost. “We thank God no one was inside, but this is a huge setback for our pupils.”

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, May 14, 2025, around 5:00 p.m. in the Kurya community, located in the Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Residents said the rainstorm was one of the most destructive the area has experienced in years.

Community leaders have called on the Kaduna State Government and emergency relief agencies to intervene urgently and rebuild the school.

While no injuries or fatalities were reported, many pupils have been set back from learning in an already porous education community.
