NiMet forecasts thunderstorms, sunny intervals across Nigeria

Must read

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a mix of sunshine and thunderstorms across the country between Wednesday and Friday.

According to the agency’s latest weather outlook released in Abuja, Wednesday will see mostly sunny conditions in the northern parts of the country, though isolated thunderstorms are expected in areas such as Taraba, Borno, Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa later in the day.

In the North-Central region, a combination of sunshine and cloud cover is forecast, with thunderstorms likely to occur in parts of Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi by the afternoon or evening.

The southern states may experience morning thunderstorms in areas including Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Thunderstorms are also predicted later in the day in parts of Imo, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, and Delta.

On Thursday, NiMet expects sunny skies across the north with potential thunderstorms in Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, and Kaduna. For the North-Central, sunny skies with intermittent cloud cover and scattered thunderstorms are anticipated in Plateau, Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and Kogi.

In the South, early morning rain is likely in Cross River, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, while the afternoon and evening could bring thunderstorms to Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, and Delta.

For Friday, the northern region is predicted to experience sunny weather with possible thunderstorms in Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba later in the day. Similar conditions—sunny intervals followed by isolated storms—are expected in the North-Central region, particularly in Plateau, Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and Kogi.

Thunderstorms are also anticipated in the southern region, starting in the morning in Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, and continuing into the day in Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Rivers, Delta, and Lagos.

NiMet advised Nigerians to remain cautious as heavy rainfall may be preceded by strong winds, potentially leading to flying debris or structural damage. The agency recommended securing loose objects, avoiding driving during storms, and disconnecting electrical appliances to reduce risks.

Airline operators were urged to consult NiMet for airport-specific forecasts to aid flight planning, while residents were encouraged to stay updated through NiMet’s official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
