FG to collaborate with NASS, media, others on cybercrime act review – Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to collaborate with the National Assembly, media, and other key stakeholders in the ongoing review of Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act.

Idris made the declaration after meeting with the American Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Minister emphasized that the collaboration aims to create a law that reflects broad consensus and meets the needs of all parties involved.

“On the ongoing review of the Cybercrime Act, we will be engaging with the National Assembly, the media, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the Act is both widely accepted and serves its intended purpose,” he said.

The Minister reiterated that the Tinubu Administration remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the fundamental principles of freedom of expression and press freedom, which are essential to the nation’s democratic fabric.

“No democracy can thrive without an independent and vibrant media,” he added. “We recognize the media as a vital partner in democratic governance, and we are committed to ensuring that freedom of expression remains protected.”

Idris stressed that the government would continue to support press freedom, ensuring that journalists have the space to carry out their duties without interference. He also urged the media to exercise this freedom responsibly, with a focus on patriotism and national unity.

“We encourage the Nigerian media to maintain responsibility and patriotism in their work. It is only through responsible journalism that our democracy can flourish,” he stated.

Additionally, the Minister underscored the government’s commitment to promoting Media and Information Literacy in an effort to combat the spread of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

In response, U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills praised the discussion, particularly regarding press freedom and the Ministry’s involvement in the reform of the Cybercrime Act.

He also welcomed the Minister’s recent statement on World Press Freedom Day, which reiterated the government’s commitment to press freedom.

“I had a very productive discussion with the Minister on press freedom and his government’s commitment to creating space for freedom of expression. I also appreciate his statement on World Press Freedom Day, and I look forward to the ministry’s role in the upcoming reforms of the Cybercrime Act,” Ambassador Mills remarked.
