Youths in Edo State have thrown their weight behind Governor Monday Okpebholo’s strong stance against cultism, following recent declaration that his administration would not bow to threats or intimidation in its resolve to end the menace.
Addressing group of young people who held a peaceful demonstration at the Government House on Tuesday, Governor Okpebholo reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and eradicating cult-related violence across the state.
“If I wasn’t protected as a young man, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” the governor said. “We must rescue our land from this scourge. Cultism must come to an end in Edo State. Every life matters, and regardless of any threats, we will pursue this fight to the end.”
He emphasized that insecurity poses a major threat to economic growth, warning that a state plagued by cult violence risks driving away investors.
“No one wants to invest in an unsafe environment,” he stated. “To grow our economy and welcome new investors, we must stop these killings and rid Edo of criminal elements.”
The governor also addressed the controversial demolition of a building reportedly linked to a cult group, insisting that all actions taken followed proper legal procedures.
“We’re not acting without basis,” he clarified. “This is a determined campaign. Neither I nor the people of Edo are afraid. Together, we will put an end to cult-related violence.”
Expressing appreciation to the demonstrators, Okpebholo added, “I’m grateful for your solidarity. These cultists are enemies of progress. They aim to destroy the hopes and future of our state—but we won’t let them win.”
The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo State Chapter, Moses Joseph, also voiced support for the governor’s efforts.
“We are tired of the bloodshed,” he said. “This peaceful demonstration reflects a joint resolution by youth and student leaders from all three senatorial zones in the state. We stand with the governor in his campaign against cultism and substance abuse.”
Joseph urged the government to ensure that the recommendations from their communique are implemented to achieve long-term success.
Echoing similar sentiments, youth advocate and human rights defender, Precious Oruche, applauded the administration’s bold measures.
“Our youths have seen enough senseless killings,” she remarked. “Before your emergence as governor, cultism had almost become a norm. We appreciate your decisive response.”
She also urged security forces to exercise caution and fairness in their operations to avoid harming innocent citizens.
“Despite criticism from some quarters, we remain fully in support of your actions,” Oruche affirmed. “We’re ready to back you whenever needed.”
