Police rearrest suspect in connection with murdered Anambra lawmaker

Authorities in Anambra State have confirmed the rearrest of a suspect involved in the abduction and killing of late Mr. Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha 1 Constituency.

The spokesperson for the state police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, made the announcement in a statement released on Tuesday from Onitsha.

Mr. Azuka was reportedly abducted by armed men on December 24, 2024, along Ugwunapampa Road in Onitsha.

His body was later discovered on the Second Niger Bridge on February 6, 2025.

The suspect, one of 11 people earlier arrested in connection with the incident, escaped from custody during a police operation to track down another suspect, Tochukwu Akolisa, who was allegedly involved in purchasing items stolen from the victims.

The escape occurred while officers of the Rapid Response Squad were carrying out the search.

According to the police, the escapee was located after an extensive intelligence-led manhunt that spanned several Nigerian states and even reached into a neighboring West African country.

He was eventually arrested on May 7 in Asaba, Delta State.

SP Ikenga stated that the suspect attempted to evade capture but was shot in the leg during the arrest and taken into custody.

The police also disclosed that relevant authorities, including the late lawmaker’s family and the state House of Assembly, have been briefed on the development.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed regret over the escape that had earlier occurred and assured the public that the suspect is now cooperating with investigators, offering useful information to support ongoing operations.

Efforts are currently underway to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects linked to the case.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to justice and to ensuring the safety of residents in the state.
