The Benue State University, Makurdi, has officially been renamed Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), in honour of the university’s founding father and former Governor of Benue State.
This change followed the passage of a bill by the Benue State House of Assembly and its subsequent signing into law by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who also serves as the Visitor to the university.
The law came into effect on December 30, 2024.
The management of the institution communicated the name change in an internal memo dated May 12, 2025, and signed by Deputy Registrar, Council and Management Affairs, Terna Alu, on behalf of the Registrar.
The notice was addressed to all principal officers, deans, directors, and heads of departments.
The memo emphasized that the renaming reflects the policy direction of the Benue State Government and is now legally binding.
It affirmed that the university remains committed to its mandate of providing quality tertiary education, now under its new identity.
In line with the change, all official communications, documents, and correspondence will now bear the new name: Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM).
The university’s management committee has also issued directives to ensure immediate implementation of the new name across all departments and units.
Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu, in whose honour the university is now named, was a visionary leader credited with founding the institution during his tenure as Governor of Benue State in the early 1990s.
