JAMB launches urgent probe into 2025 UTME amid surge in complaints

Must read

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has commenced a swift evaluation of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) process following a spike in complaints from candidates nationwide.

The board, which announced the 2025 UTME results last Friday, said it has received an unexpectedly high number of grievances related to scoring inconsistencies.

In a press release on Monday, JAMB revealed that it is fast-tracking its routine post-exam audit, an exercise usually carried out months after the tests.

This audit spans all aspects of the UTME: from candidate registration, through the exam itself, to the final release of results.

JAMB emphasised that it guarantees every candidate the chance to participate in the exam, and when technical hitches arise, immediate rescheduling is done for affected individuals.

To resolve the present issues, the board is consulting a panel of experts, including representatives from the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, vice-chancellors and rectors serving as chief external examiners, and members of the Educational Association and Research Network in Africa.

The board pledged to swiftly implement corrective actions should any flaws be uncovered.

This comes amid growing frustration from candidates and parents who have taken to social media to question the fairness and credibility of the results.

Some students have outrightly disputed their scores, claiming they do not match their actual performance.

Reports suggest that over 8,000 candidates have filed formal complaints citing technical errors during the exam period.

However, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, insisted the released results accurately depict candidates’ performance.

The 2025 UTME revealed that over 78% of test-takers scored below 200 out of a possible 400, triggering widespread concern about the standard of the exam and its administration.

JAMB has urged Nigerians to remain calm as it carries out its review, assuring that any verified irregularities will be addressed to uphold the examination’s credibility.
