IPOB declares May 30 lockdown across Southeast

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a total shutdown across Biafraland on May 30, 2025, as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives during the Biafran War.

In a statement released on Monday by the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB emphasised that the sit-at-home exercise is a yearly remembrance event aimed at honouring the sacrifices of Biafran men and women who died during the Nigerian Civil War.

The group said this year’s observance would involve lectures both within Nigeria and abroad, dedicated to Biafra’s fallen heroes and heroines.

The group said that governors in the South-East and South-South regions have been notified of the planned commemoration.

It added that the day will be observed with complete shutdowns of markets, schools, religious services, and public gatherings from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., urging residents to stay indoors in quiet reflection.

IPOB also revealed that it had reached out to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), requesting adjustments to the exam schedule for that day to accommodate students.

While urging total compliance across Biafraland, IPOB clarified that there would be no demonstrations within Nigeria to avoid confrontations with security forces.

Instead, members in the diaspora are expected to hold peaceful events such as rallies and town halls to honour the dead and support the call for Biafra’s independence.

The group reiterated that only essential workers, including medical professionals, emergency responders, and journalists, will be exempt from the lockdown.
