The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, will be questioned over a viral video that allegedly shows him involved in naira abuse.
In the video, believed to be from his recent 54th birthday celebration, Tompolo is seen dancing while ₦1,000 notes are sprayed in the air around him.
The act has sparked outrage online, as spraying or mishandling the naira is a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
According to Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, it is illegal to spray, dance on, or step on the naira at social events. Violation of the law is punishable by a fine, imprisonment, or both.
In a statement responding to the public backlash, the EFCC confirmed that “nobody is above the law” and that Tompolo would be invited to explain his role in the incident.
This comes at a time when the anti-graft agency is cracking down hard on naira abuse. Popular figures like Bobrisky, AY comedian and E-Money have recently faced similar scrutiny.
Bobrisky is currently serving a six-month prison sentence, while E-Money was questioned last week for allegedly spraying both naira and dollars at public gatherings.
So far, the EFCC says it has secured over 20 convictions and is prosecuting more than 200 people for Naira-related offences.
As of now, Tompolo has not made a public statement, and the EFCC has not confirmed when he will appear for questioning.
