Barcelona stuns Madrid in epic El Clásico, closes in on La Liga title

Must read

FC Barcelona edged Real Madrid in a gripping 4–3 victory at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Sunday, May 11, 2025, putting themselves within touching distance of the La Liga title.

In what was arguably the most thrilling El Clásico of the season, Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé drew first blood with a clinical brace in the opening stages.

The French striker’s explosive performance looked set to doom the Catalans early, but a fiery response from Xavi’s side soon turned the tide.

Eric García opened the scoring for Barcelona, followed by a dazzling solo effort from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Raphinha then punished a Madrid defensive blunder to send the home crowd into raptures. He added another minutes later, putting Barça up 4–2 by halftime.

Mbappé completed his hat-trick in the second half, but despite a spirited push from Los Blancos, Barcelona’s defence held firm, securing a vital three points.

The win extends Barcelona’s lead to seven points with just three games left, making them strong favourites to lift the 2024/25 La Liga trophy.

It also completes a rare four-match sweep over Madrid this season, including wins in the Super Cup and Copa del Rey.
