Benue State witnessed a tragic afternoon on Friday as suspected herdsmen launched deadly assaults on two communities, leaving nine people dead despite a strong security presence.
The coordinated attacks struck Ayilamo in the Tombo ward of Logo Local Government and Jato-Acka in Kwande Local Government Area.
According to local accounts, more than 20 armed individuals invaded Jato-Acka in broad daylight, opening fire randomly and killing six people instantly.
Shortly after, the attackers moved through the Ikyungwa route to Ayilamo, where they claimed three more lives, including a member of the Benue State Livestock Guard.
Tyovenda Igyutu, a prominent figure in the Ayilamo community, said the attack could have led to more devastation if not for the timely arrival of soldiers and police officers.
Youth leader Lawrence Akerigba from Jato-Acka confirmed the assault, stating, “They arrived around 4 p.m., opened fire, and burned down homes.”
