Blind UTME candidate caught using another blind person as impersonator

Must read

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has uncovered a case of impersonation involving a blind candidate who hired another blind individual, an undergraduate, to sit for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on his behalf.

JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, made the disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.

He described the incident as disappointing, especially considering the board’s ongoing commitment to supporting candidates with disabilities in accessing tertiary education opportunities.

Oloyede praised the efforts of the Prof. Peter Okebukola-led JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG), which oversees the examination process for visually impaired candidates.

He highlighted the comprehensive support JAMB offers to these individuals, including full refunds of registration fees, as well as provision for their transport, accommodation, and feeding during the examination.

“For the 2025 UTME, a total of 501 blind candidates were examined by JEOG at 11 centres across the country. Unfortunately, among them, one was found to have arranged for another blind undergraduate to impersonate him,” Oloyede revealed.

The results of the 2025 UTME were officially released on Friday. According to JAMB, of the 1.9 million candidates who sat for the examination, more than 1.5 million scored below 200 marks — the midpoint in the total score of 400. The examination tests candidates in four subjects, with the Use of English being compulsory and three others chosen based on their proposed field of study.

Commenting on the performance data, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the results reflect the positive impact of the government’s intensified efforts to combat examination malpractice and uphold the integrity of the nation’s education system.
