Pope Leo XIV to hold first major mass today

Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected leader of the Catholic Church, will celebrate his first major Mass on Friday at the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican has announced.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni informed the press that the Pope will also make his first public appearance from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica for the midday prayer on Sunday.

AFRIPOST had reported that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago was elected as the new Pope on Thursday, following four rounds of voting during the conclave held in the Sistine Chapel.

His election came just 24 hours after the conclave began.

Cardinal Prevost, who is now the first-ever Pope from the United States, previously held a significant role in the Vatican, overseeing the dicastery responsible for the global coordination of bishops.
