JSC retires Judge, suspends Magistrate over alleged misconduct

Must read

The Kogi State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has approved the compulsory retirement of Judge Alemeru Adekunle Bamidele of the Area Court, following misconduct findings.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Commission’s Secretary, Dr. Tanko Muhammed, also revealed that Magistrate Tanimu U. Muhammed has been suspended from performing judicial functions for two years and issued a formal warning.

These disciplinary measures were reached during the Commission’s 136th meeting held in Lokoja.

Meanwhile, four judicial officers—Magistrate Abdul Musa Mopah, Mr. Yunusa Medugu, Barrister Deborah O. Ebiloma, and Mrs. Anuhi Safiya Oiza—were exonerated of all allegations brought against them.

According to Dr. Muhammed, the Commission’s Disciplinary Committee first reviewed the petitions before submitting its recommendations.

The retired judge was found to have improperly purchased a property involved in a case before his court—an asset he had ordered to be sold.

Investigations also revealed that he failed to fully pay for the property and issued a ruling without giving both parties the opportunity to be heard.

In a separate move aimed at improving the judiciary’s working conditions, the Commission has established a six-member panel, chaired by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Muizudeen Abdullah, to propose strategies for enhancing the welfare of magistrates and area court judges.
