The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed sanctions on Kenya Airways for breaching passenger rights in three separate cases, including one involving Nigerian traveler Gloria Omisore.
This was made known by the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, through a post on his verified X account Wednesday evening.
According to the NCAA, the airline violated several consumer protection guidelines, such as failure to provide adequate care, lack of transparency regarding travel conditions, ignoring the Authority’s inquiries, refusal to issue refunds and compensation, and mismanagement of baggage.
A formal sanction letter has been issued to the airline, which includes financial penalties and instructions for corrective action. Kenya Airways has been given a deadline of seven days to refund the affected passengers and compensate them with 1,000 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) each, as provided for in the NCAA’s 2023 regulations.
The agency also warned that additional penalties would follow if the airline fails to comply.
The case involving Gloria Omisore dates back to February 2025, when she was flown from Lagos to Nairobi without the necessary French transit visa needed for her onward connection to Manchester. As a result, she was stranded at Nairobi airport for a total of 27 hours.
Despite her health concerns, Omisore reportedly received little support from the airline’s staff during the ordeal. The NCAA also noted that Kenya Airways issued a public statement that misrepresented the facts, and has since failed to correct it as instructed.
