BREAKING: White smoke rises in Vatican as cardinals elect new Pope

Must read

White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney this evening, marking the successful conclusion of the papal conclave and the election of the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

The decision came after two days of voting by the College of Cardinals, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

The late pontiff led the Church for over a decade, leaving behind a legacy of reform, compassion, and global engagement.

The identity of the newly elected pope remains undisclosed at this hour.

In keeping with tradition, the cardinal protodeacon is expected to step out onto the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica shortly to deliver the “Habemus Papam” announcement, revealing the pope’s name and papal title to the world.

Crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in celebration at the sight of the white smoke, an iconic symbol of a successful vote. The faithful now wait in eager anticipation for the first appearance and blessing of the new pontiff.
