Robert Francis Prevost has been chosen as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, marking a historic moment as the first American to ascend to the papacy, the Vatican confirmed on Thursday.
Prevost, known for his moderate views and long-standing ties to Pope Francis, brings with him extensive experience, including missionary service in Peru.
He will serve as the Church’s 267th pope under the name Pope Leo XIV.
