Jonathan cautions against forced one-party system in Nigeria

Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has raised concerns over any moves to impose a one-party system in the country, emphasising the need for caution and deliberate planning if such a political structure must be adopted.

Speaking in Abuja at a memorial event in honour of the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, Jonathan noted that attempts to achieve a one-party state through manipulative politics aimed at serving personal ambitions could have harmful consequences for the nation.

He advised the family of the late national figure to establish an annual lecture series to uphold and spread his legacy of unity, fairness, and national development.

Also speaking at the event, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, expressed regret over the state of the nation, saying the sacrifices made by founding fathers like Edwin Clark had been rendered meaningless due to persistent insecurity, poverty, and the increasing cost of living.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the occasion, urged Nigerians to prioritise national unity over self-interest, stressing that Nigeria’s growth depends on collective commitment to its oneness.
