Hazy conditions, thunderstorms expected across Nigeria – NiMet

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast, warning of hazy conditions and thunderstorms in various parts of the country from Tuesday through Thursday.

According to NiMet’s bulletin released on Monday, light dust haze is expected to affect areas such as Katsina and Kano on Tuesday, while thunderstorms are likely to occur in Taraba and Adamawa by afternoon and evening.

For the North-Central region, the forecast predicts mostly sunny skies with scattered clouds in the morning, followed by thunderstorms in parts of Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory later in the day.

In the southern states, a mix of cloudy skies and sunshine is anticipated.

Morning thunderstorms may affect areas like Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa, with more widespread thunderstorms projected in the afternoon and evening across states such as Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Lagos, and Delta.

On Wednesday, the northern states are expected to see sunny intervals with light clouds throughout the day. Thunderstorms are still forecast for Taraba and Adamawa by afternoon or evening.

Meanwhile, central states like Abuja, Plateau, Niger, and Nasarawa may experience afternoon and evening storms.

In the South, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom are likely to have early morning thunderstorms.

These conditions will expand in the afternoon to include Ogun, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Abia, and several other states.

Looking ahead to Thursday, NiMet expects persistent sunny skies in the North and cloudy conditions in the North-Central region during the morning.

Later in the day, storms are forecast to affect Abuja, Plateau, Kogi, and parts of Niger State.

Southern states such as Delta and Bayelsa may experience morning thunderstorms, with the weather intensifying across Osun, Ogun, Edo, Enugu, Lagos, and others by afternoon.

NiMet also cautioned the public about the potential health impact of suspended dust particles, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions.

The agency emphasized the need for safety measures in areas prone to thunderstorms.

Residents are advised to secure loose items, avoid driving during heavy downpours, disconnect electrical devices during storms, and steer clear of tall trees.

Airline operators were urged to consult NiMet for detailed, location-specific forecasts to aid flight planning.

NiMet encouraged Nigerians to stay informed through regular updates on its official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
