Over 20 villages in Sokoto State have been deserted following a surge in violent attacks reportedly masterminded by loyalists of infamous bandit leader, Bello Turji.
AFRIPOST gathered that the wave of violence has driven scores of residents into displacement, with many now taking shelter in Gatawa, a town located in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
The influx of displaced persons has caused distress and overcrowding in the town, as survivors flee for safety amidst rising insecurity.
Speaking to Punch via phone, a local resident, Mallam Saminu, confirmed the influx of displaced villagers.
He said, “It’s true, several surrounding villages have been overrun. People are now seeking refuge here.
“Some are staying with family, while others have been accommodated in two secondary schools, one close to a military base and another within the town.”
Among the communities affected are Makira, Dan Tazako I, II, and III, Garin Tunkiya, Katsalle, Dama, Shabanza, and Gaugai, highlighting the extensive scale of the displacement.
This renewed crisis highlights the ongoing volatility in eastern Sokoto, where repeated attacks persist despite military efforts aimed at neutralizing armed groups and restoring calm.
