UK Court sets June 3 for trial of suspect in Nigerian teen’s murder

A UK court has fixed June 3 for the trial of Marcus Monzo, a Spanish-Brazilian man accused of killing 14-year-old Nigerian schoolboy, Daniel Anjorin, in North-East London.

The case will be heard at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, widely known as the Old Bailey.

Monzo, 37, was arrested following a violent knife attack that occurred in Hainault on April 30, 2024. He allegedly attacked Anjorin with two Japanese-style swords—inflicting fatal wounds to the boy’s chest and neck as he made his way to school.

British media, including the Daily Mail, reported that Monzo also injured four other individuals during a 20-minute stabbing spree in the same area.

The suspect, who identifies himself as a “mystic musician,” appeared in court on Friday.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and attempted murder of Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry Polania, and Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield.

He also denied wounding a police officer, Inspector Moloy Campbell, with intent.

In total, Monzo faces ten charges. He admitted to only two—possession of offensive weapons, namely a katana and a tanto sword.

He denied the remaining eight charges, which include aggravated burglary and carrying a kitchen knife without lawful reason.

According to earlier proceedings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Monzo had allegedly rammed a van into a fence on Laing Close, hitting a pedestrian, Iwule, before brandishing a sword and attacking others nearby.

Daniel Anjorin was among the victims rushed to hospital after the incident but later died from his injuries.
