Police dismiss rumored abduction of EKSU graduate as self orchestrated

The Ekiti State Police Command has refuted claims circulating on social media about the alleged abduction of Helen Kayode, a graduate of Ekiti State University (EKSU), declaring the story false and orchestrated.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 2, 2025, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, clarified that preliminary investigations revealed there was no kidnapping incident, contrary to viral online reports.

“The Ekiti State Police Command wishes to debunk the news circulating on the social media that one HELEN KAYODE, a graduate of Ekiti State University, was kidnapped and kept in an uncompleted building surrounded by bush, as she was never kidnapped but masterminded the false information for the reason still under investigation,” the statement read.

According to Abutu, the Command initially received a report from a family member who claimed Helen had been abducted along the Iworoko-Ekiti to Ado-Ekiti route.

In response, officers immediately launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of her boyfriend, Oluwanifemi Olusesan, who was reportedly with her the previous day, May 1.

Upon questioning, Olusesan denied any knowledge of the alleged abduction. He contacted Helen by phone, and she confirmed she was safe in Lagos and promised to return by Saturday.

The police emphasized that the kidnapping report was a fabrication, with the motive still under investigation.

The Command urged the public to disregard the false alarm and assured residents that Ekiti remains secure.

“The Command implores members of the public to disregard the false information while reassuring citizens that the State is safe and secured, as the Command has continued to prioritize the maximum security of all and sundry,” the statement added.

Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Eribo, issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation, stressing that anyone caught generating or sharing false content capable of inciting panic would face legal consequences.

“The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP JOSEPH ERIBO, warns against the creation and publication of false information that is capable of creating unnecessary tension in the State, as well as the circulation of such false and unverified information, as the Command will ensure anyone found wanting will be made to face the wrath of the law,” the statement concluded.
