The Federal Government has kicked off a major livestock development initiative in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The new programme, launched by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, aims to modernize and improve the livestock sector while promoting rural development.
During his visit to the Wase grazing reserve on Thursday, Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, introduced the pilot phase of the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP).
According to Maiha, this effort aligns with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is designed to create an integrated livestock value chain that generates employment and reduces regional insecurity.
“This launch marks a turning point,” the minister stated. “We plan to build residential facilities for herder families, develop earth dams for year-round pasture irrigation, and establish fully-equipped veterinary and primary healthcare centres.
“These services will be powered entirely by renewable solar energy to support environmental sustainability.”
Maiha further noted that the project is expected to stimulate Plateau State’s economy and attract private investment.
The federal government, he added, will also build roads within the grazing reserve to improve accessibility.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Commissioner for Livestock, Sunday Akpa, expressed full support for the initiative, describing it as a vital addition to state efforts to develop the livestock sector.
