A Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has issued a warrant for the arrest of ex-police officer Aremu Musiliu, who is accused of fatally shooting a woman, Comfort Udoh, in 2015.
The tragic incident occurred on September 16, 2015, at Ijegun Bus Stop, where Aremu allegedly shot Comfort in the head after a failed attempt to extort N2,000 from her husband, Pastor Godwin Udoh, of the Full Gospel Church of God.
The couple, along with their four children—including an infant—were returning from a church programme in a tricycle when Aremu and other police officers reportedly stopped them.
When Udoh explained he had no money, the confrontation escalated into gunfire. Udoh suffered bullet wounds to his jaw and shoulder, while Comfort was killed instantly.
Sources told PUNCH Metro that the court issued the wanted notice after authorities repeatedly failed to bring Aremu to trial despite several court orders.
Although he was initially dismissed from the police force and remanded in custody, Aremu was granted bail in 2017.
Justice O.A. Taiwo had previously criticised the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for mishandling the case, which was cited as a reason Aremu was granted bail.
He was released on a N1 million bail with two sureties but has since vanished and failed to return to court.
Following a request by prosecutors, Justice S.I. Sonaike of Court 29, Criminal Division, officially declared Aremu wanted on April 9, 2025.
“The defendant is hereby declared wanted by the Court for the offence of murder… and is to be apprehended wherever he may be found,” the judge ruled.
According to a legal advisory from Assistant Chief Counsel Taiwo Lambo, Aremu admitted to firing at the tricycle, resulting in Comfort’s death and her husband’s injuries.
In an emotional interview, Pastor Udoh appealed to the public for assistance in seeking justice.
“I’m barely surviving. I’ve been asked to vacate my home because I can’t afford the rent. My kids are no longer in school. I’m asking for help from well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.
