An officer of the Osun State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun Corps, has been killed following a deadly ambush by armed assailants in Iwo, Osun State.
According to a statement issued by the Corps Commander, Isaac Omoyele, through the agency’s spokesperson Yusuf Idowu Abass, the incident occurred on Wednesday at the Papa boundary area after local farmers raised an alarm about an assault on their farmland.
Operatives from Amotekun and members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) responded swiftly to the distress call. However, they were ambushed upon arrival by a gang reportedly led by a notorious criminal, Akeem Olofa.
During the confrontation, one of the Amotekun officers, Lamidi Abiodun, was fatally attacked. “He was struck in the head with a machete after bullets failed to penetrate his body,” Abass revealed. Abiodun died instantly at the scene.
The attack also left one vigilante member, Nurudeen Alowonle, missing, while another officer, Alex Sola, sustained a gunshot injury to his leg.
The agency described Abiodun’s death as a significant blow to its operations and to the state’s broader security efforts, praising him as a dedicated officer who died in active duty.
The incident has been officially reported to the Nigeria Police in Iwo for thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible. Abiodun’s body has been moved to a local morgue pending burial.
Security forces in the state have vowed to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The public has also been urged to provide any useful information that could aid in the arrest of the attackers.
Despite the loss, the Osun Amotekun Corps reaffirmed its determination to protect the lives and property of residents across the state.
