Kenyan lawmaker Charles Were was gunned down on Wednesday evening in Nairobi by armed assailants on a motorcycle, according to local media reports.
Citizen TV reported that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time. Were, who represented the Kasipul constituency in western Kenya, was attacked by two men riding a motorbike.
Quoting the broadcaster, Reuters stated that one of the assailants alighted and shot the legislator at close range. His driver reportedly survived the ordeal.
Efforts to save the opposition MP proved futile, as he was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
Kenyan police have described the shooting as a deliberate and calculated attack. However, no suspects have been apprehended so far, and the motive behind the killing remains unknown.
Were was affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the opposition party headed by Raila Odinga, who was defeated by President William Ruto in the 2022 elections.
