Zamfara: Villages burn, dozens abducted in retaliation attack

Must read

Zamfara State continues to reel from a wave of reprisal attacks by armed groups, with the latest violence reported in Yar Tashar Sahabi, a village in Maru LGA.

Bandits, allegedly retaliating for the recent killing of their members by vigilantes, launched a predawn raid on Tuesday, destroying shops, rustling livestock, damaging vehicles and abducting villagers

Locals confirmed that a group of vigilantes had earlier confronted the gunmen on Sunday, killing several and retrieving cattle taken during earlier raids.

In a related development, coordinated assaults were also reported in Tsafe LGA.

Earlier this month, bandits attacked Keta village after the death of a gang leader identified as Dan Isuhu.

That raid left one resident dead, 11 vehicles incinerated, and shops looted.

That same day, Gidan Arne village was also targeted. Armed men shot three individuals, killing two on the spot and leaving one in critical condition.

Over 40 women were reportedly abducted, while several houses were destroyed.

Despite growing concerns, police response has been slow. DSP Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson for the state police command, said he had not received confirmation of the Yar Tashar Sahabi incident.

“I will call the DPO in Maru and get back,” he stated — but no updates had been provided as of the time of filing this report.
