The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has confirmed the tragic death of one of its physiotherapists, Dr. Alex Ogunniyi, who was fatally shot last Friday near the hospital premises.
According to the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, Dr. Ogunniyi was on his way to get lunch at a nearby eatery when he was struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles in pursuit.
The vehicle behind was reportedly firing at the one ahead when a bullet hit the physiotherapist in the neck.
Despite being rushed to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
In response, the hospital’s management has petitioned the Edo State Police Command and also notified the Department of State Services (DSS), urging a thorough investigation and swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident has sparked outrage among medical staff at UBTH, prompting protests as colleagues mourn the loss and demand improved safety measures around the hospital environment.
