Court sentences Nigerian man to eight months for stealing wrappers

A 33-year-old man, Salisu Abubakar, was sentenced to eight months in prison on Wednesday by a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of stealing wrappers valued at N830,000.

The presiding magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, offered Abubakar an alternative of paying a N50,000 fine in place of serving the prison term.

Magistrate Emmanuel also cautioned the convict, who resides on Liberia Road, Malali, Kaduna, against engaging in criminal activities in the future and ordered the return of the stolen wrappers to their rightful owner.

Abubakar had pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.

Following his plea, the prosecutor, Chidi Leo, requested that the case be processed summarily in accordance with Section 286(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

The prosecutor informed the court that the theft took place on April 18 at Ungwan Rimi Road, Kaduna.

He explained that Abubakar, along with two accomplices who remain at large, broke into a shop owned by Rabiu Nasir and stole wrappers and lace fabrics worth N830,000.

Abubakar was apprehended with the stolen goods, while the other suspects fled the scene.
