A devastating road crash at Ukpo Junction on the Nteje-Awka Road in Anambra State has resulted in the deaths of eight people and injuries to six others, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed on Monday.

According to the FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Mrs Joyce Alexander, the collision occurred late at night and involved a Mack tanker without a number plate and a Toyota Hiace bus bearing registration number EKP375XM.

Initial findings, including accounts from eyewitnesses, revealed that the bus, which was travelling from Abakaliki to Onitsha, was speeding and attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre before crashing head-on into the tanker heading toward Awka on a single-lane road.

The impact claimed the lives of eight passengers—four men and four women—while six others sustained injuries. Among the injured were two men and four women.

Emergency responders from the Nteje unit quickly arrived at the scene, providing medical assistance to the survivors and conveying them to nearby hospitals.

The deceased was transported to Jerusalem Mortuary in Nteje after being confirmed dead by a medical professional.

Mrs Alexander later visited the injured victims at Regina Caeli Hospital and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Awka to check on their condition and offer support.

Following the incident, road safety officials renewed calls for drivers to exercise caution, emphasizing the dangers of speeding and reckless overtaking.
