Agbakoba demands retraction of sexual harassment allegation against Senate President, Akpabio

Must read

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, has issued a second formal letter to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging her to withdraw her sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, Agbakoba—who is also representing Akpabio in the matter—criticised the suspended Kogi Central senator for failing to address what he described as major inconsistencies in her allegation.

The lawyer referenced a previous letter dated April 14, 2025, in which Akpoti-Uduaghan was asked to explain contradictions surrounding the alleged incident, said to have occurred on December 8, 2023.

He pointed out that the senator had publicly praised Akpabio on social media the very next day, December 9, 2023—a post she has since deleted.

In a follow-up letter dated April 22 and signed on behalf of Olisa Agbakoba Legal (AOL), the senior lawyer wrote: “You have not clarified the contradiction between your allegation of harassment on December 8, 2023, and your public commendation of our client on December 9. Instead of explaining, you deleted the post, which raises further concerns.”

Agbakoba also questioned the delay in bringing the allegation to light, noting that it was made more than a year after the alleged incident, on February 28, 2025.

He said that despite the claim, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan continued to appear alongside Akpabio at various functions throughout 2024, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union session in Geneva in March, where she was seen taking photos and posting positively about him online.

“The timeline and your interactions with our client after the alleged incident make your claims implausible,” Agbakoba stated, while sharing screenshots of the senator’s social media posts as part of his argument.

Concluding, he demanded that Akpoti-Uduaghan withdraw her allegations, insisting they are “clearly false and unsubstantiated.”
