Tension in Niger as deputy Gov Yakubu Garba allegedly prepares to resign

Must read

Barring any sudden developments, Niger State Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba is expected to resign from his position “at any moment,” according to multiple sources.

Sources who spoke to Daily Nigerian revealed that Garba had already started moving his personal items out of the official residence over the weekend, a strong indication that his departure from office is imminent.

One insider disclosed, “As I speak to you, he has substantially moved out his belongings from the official residence to his private residence. He will resign any moment from now.”

It was further learned that some traditional rulers paid a visit to the deputy governor on Sunday night in a bid to dissuade him from stepping down.

However, it remains uncertain if their intervention has led to any change of heart.

Rift With Governor Bago Blamed for Impending Resignation

Sources close to the situation linked Garba’s likely resignation to a worsening rift with Governor Umaru Bago.

According to insiders, the deputy governor has faced persistent marginalization and disrespect from the governor and members of his inner circle.

“In recent times, he was not consulted on many government activities despite being elected on the same ticket with the governor,” a source stated.

The situation reportedly deteriorated further when the governor allegedly overruled Garba’s choice for the upcoming local government elections.

Although the deputy governor and APC leaders in Shiroro Local Government Area had selected Babangida Kudodo as their consensus candidate, the party headquarters ultimately announced Isyaku Bawa — a move said to have been orchestrated by Governor Bago.

Other agreed-upon consensus candidates were also reportedly replaced without the deputy governor’s input.

A source added, “Nobody consulted him on anything. He does not have control over any part of the government.

“The deputy is treated with disrespect despite his huge contributions to the success of the party and loyalty to his principal.”

Additionally, there are claims that Garba’s monthly allowances and operational funds were significantly reduced.

Attempts to reach the deputy governor for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to messages.

However, his press secretary, Ummikhultume Abdullahi, denied knowledge of any plans to resign.

“I am not aware of his plan to quit. He has not relocated from the official residence. I just had a meeting with him at the official residence,” she said.
